LIFE OF JAY
John Jay was born on December 12, 1745 in New York City, New York. He attended Columbia College to study law. He died
on May 17, 1829 at noon in his home.
John Jay became a member of the New York Committee of Correspondance in 1774. He was elected as a delegate in the continental
congress between 1774-1776. Jay was a member of the New York Constitutional Convention and was also the first
Chief Justice of New York in 1777. In 1789 he was appointed the First Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United
States. In 1794, he created and negotiated the Jay Treaty with Great Britain. 1797-1801 was the time where Jay
served the people by becoming the Governor of New York state.
